Worship Of Angels and Ascetism
Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God. Colossians 2:18-19
Many years ago I remember talking about what I just read in this scripture, not to worship angels. There was a time when several books came out about angels and it seemed we were almost worshiping angels. We are not to worship angels, they are ministers of God. But it is God alone we should worship. This version (ESV) uses the word asceticism, which I had to look up. Asceticism: severe self-discipline and avoidance of all forms of indulgence, typically for religious reasons.
As I looked up asceticism in google I saw a Buddhism statue and google seemed to reference this religion as an example of asceticism. The article also mention Jainism, Hinduism, Christianity and Judaism. Christianity is about grace, God's grace. It is not a works oriented religion or at least it should not be. But sometimes we get off track. We want to do things to earn God's grace. God's grace is freely given. It cannot be purchased with all the good works we do. Severe self- discipline, would be trying to make it to God through works. God wants us to worship him alone. Look at the first commandment; You shall have no other gods before Me. God wants us to worship and serve him, alone. Sometimes I feel we put a good speaker / preacher in God's place. Sometimes it seems we get so religious, our denomination gets the worship. But it is God we are to worship. I remember a story I heard of years ago. A preacher tried to show his humility by crawling up to the pulpit on his hands and knees. A false humility, he was actually trying to point to himself and his great humility. God is to be worshiped, not angels, not a great speaker, not a great denomination but God alone. Christians sometimes do get off track in trying to do good works, in a works salvation. I have been there. God desires relationship, a daily walking and talking with God, not all the works we can do. Actually works should be a result of the work God has done on the inside of our hearts, not a means to God, but a result of a changed life. Grace is free to all that will accept it. God Bless, LVZ.
