Remember The Sabbath #4
8“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Exodus 20:8-11
There is a book I want to read called "Take The Day Off". I believe it is on the Sabbath Day. I was listening to the author of this book being interviewed by Mike Huckabee. The author is a pastor of a church in Texas. He made a statement that this is probably the easiest commandment to break. Even pastors that wouldn't think of committing adultery, or idolatry, or murder, or using the Lord's name in vain have no problem breaking the 4th commandment. I remember breaking it many times. One summer during a busy time, I worked 28 days in a row and then after 2 days off I would work another 28 days in a row. During times of divorce, I would rather work on a Sunday rather than have to face an empty house. We live in a 24/7 world. There was a time when most towns would shut down on Sunday, probably back in the 1950s. I am listing to a sermon and the pastor is saying he has been working 7 days a week. His day off is supposed to be Friday and he has been busy. The Sabbath is supposed to be a day of rest. I don't think we realize how important the Sabbath is. In 1993 I was forced to take a month of medical leave. I felt really guilty because I knew it was a busy time at work. But the Doctor I saw at medical that day in January 1993 said when I left her office I was the leave the factory and not come back for a month. I was emotionally drained and in her words didn't have anything left to give to anyone. It took me about a week to realize she was right and I realized I really did need the time off. God's plan was to have one day of rest every week. God is not asking us to take a vacation but to just have a day off every week, more important than a vacation every year. I saw during the time I was working major overtime that after a week or so of constant overtime we started doing less in 12 hours than we use to do in eight hours. I remember the first time I saw a 24 hour Walmart. I was on a road trip and happened to stop in Dickenson N.D. and I was surprised to find a store open in the middle of the night, in small-town North Dakota. In the first verse of Exodus chapter twenty, the chapter where God is giving the ten commandments are these words. 1And God spoke all these words: Exodus 20:1 It was God that gave us these commandments and the fourth commandment is just as important as the 6th commandment. God bless, LVZ.
