How Big Is Your Understanding?
In reading Job 38, I wonder if God is using sarcasms. God asks Job, where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?Tell me, if you have understanding. Job 38:4
Who determined its measurements—surely you know!Or who stretched the line upon it? Job 38:5
Surely you know! Can you measure it? If I were talking in that tone I would feel like I am being sarcastic. It's like Job, if your understanding is so great tell me? The chapter goes on to other things.
“Or who shut in the sea with doors
when it burst out from the womb, Job 38:8
Who gives the water in the ocean and the seas it boundaries? Are you so knowledgeable and have so great an understanding that you can control the great seas and oceans of the world?
“Where is the way to the dwelling of light,
and where is the place of darkness,
that you may take it to its territory
and that you may discern the paths to its home?
You know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great! Job 38:19-21
and where is the place of darkness,
that you may take it to its territory
and that you may discern the paths to its home?
You know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great! Job 38:19-21
Here again it sounds sarcastic to me, you know for you were born then. Where is the dwelling place of light and the path to its home? Where is the place of darkness? If you go back to Genesis and the creation, God was there and spoke into existence living beings. He separated land and water. Made the Sun and the moon for a greater light for the day and a lesser light for the night and established their paths.
“Has the rain a father,
or who has begotten the drops of dew?
From whose womb did the ice come forth,
and who has given birth to the frost of heaven?
The waters become hard like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen. Job 38:28-30
or who has begotten the drops of dew?
From whose womb did the ice come forth,
and who has given birth to the frost of heaven?
The waters become hard like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen. Job 38:28-30
Where does rain come from? Can you make water hard like a rock (frozen). Yes today with knowledge given from God we make ice cubes in our refrigerators. Can you imagine Job telling God if Job lived today, yes I can make ice cubes in my fridge. Where did that knowledge come from. Did that knowledge come from single cell that crawled our of the ocean? If your understanding is so great, can you go to Job and answer all these questions?
In Job 39 the questions continue.
“Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars
and spreads his wings toward the south?
Is it at your command that the eagle mounts upand makes his nest on high? Job 39:26-27
and spreads his wings toward the south?
Is it at your command that the eagle mounts upand makes his nest on high? Job 39:26-27
Is it your understanding that makes the hawk and the eagle soar in the skies? The God of creation continues, can you with your great understanding answer all these questions? I don't know about you but it almost feels like God is being sarcastic with Job. The God of all creations speaks to Job out of a whirlwind and asks question after question. Job can you stand up like a man and answer all these questions. Is your understanding so great you can compare it with God's?
Here in Job 40 God stops talking with this question.
He who argues with God, let him answer it.” Job 40:1-2.
If you can argue with God answer these questions in Job chapters 38 through 42.
God bless, LVZ.
